How to Reach the Temple?

  • Kamakhya Temple is 14 kms from Guwahati and the city is networked by road, rail, and air.
  • By Air
  • The closest air terminal is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport of Gauhati (GAU).
  • The air station is only 20 kilometres from the temple and you can make it in 45 minutes.
  • You can fly straight to Gauhati from all main cities of India. 
  •  Indigo, Air India and Spicejet have direct air link to the city.
  • By Train
  • Rail is the easiest way to reach the place.
  • Kamakhya Junction is less than 7 kilometres from the temple. You can reach in 15 to 20 minutes by auto.

The Final Journey Up Nilachal Hill

  • From Kamakhya Gate it’s an uphill journey of 3 kilometres.
  •  On regular days you can easily get a shared van or jeep to go to the top.

  • But during the Ambubachi Mela private vehicles are not allowed beyond the foothill due to the crowds.

Understanding Darshan and Entry During Ambubachi Mela 

  • Before visiting the temple you must know about the darshan system.
  • On regular days, you can pick from a paid special darshan or a free general queue.
  • But during the mela, there is no VIP entry for any individual. 
  • Everyone has to join the same queue.
  • The special darshan starts from 28 June, and you can book it online on mkdonline.in (official temple site).
  • Please avoid people who claim special entry or darshan. 
  • From 23rd to 27th June no online booking will be done. 
  • On regular days the temple open at 5.30 in the morning to 1 PM. Then it opens from 2.30 PM to 9.30 PM. The timings are different during Mela.

What Happens During the Four Days of Ambubachi Mela?

  • Each day has its own significance that pulls the visiors for different reasons.
  • The Mela begins on 22nd June and the temple sanctum is closed. Marking the start of Maa Kamakhya’s sacred annual cycle. As the rituals begin thousands gather around the temple.
  • The temple remains closed from 23 to 25 June and the devotees cannot have the darshan inside the sanctum. But the atmosphere is vibrant with gathering of people and devotional songs.
  • The temple reopens on 26th June after special purification rituals. It is also the crucial and packed day of the festival. Many individuals hang around for long and some spend the entire night to be among the first in line. 
  • All the visitors are handed Angodak (sacred water of the spring) and Angabastra (a small piece of red cloth from the Sanctum). Receiving the prasad is the most meaningful part of the pilgrimage.
