Why Was The Climax Changed?

Sholay was released in 1975, during the period when the Prime Minister of India, Mrs Indira Gandhi, had imposed an emergency. During that 21-month period, films and media faced heavy censorship, leading to changes in movie climaxes. The director of the movie said in a recent interview, “At that time, 1975, when the film was released, there was an Emergency on. So, it was not very easy to have a showdown with the information ministry or the censor board. Therefore, we had to accept the verdict.”

What Is The Original Climax?

In the original version of the movie, Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan) is killed by Thakur Baldev Singh (Sanjeev Kumar) with spiked shoes in revenge. But the sensor board objected to the climax and asked the makers to change it. The makers had no choice, so they changed the climax to have Gabbar Singh arrested by the cops. Ramesh Sippy said, “There’s not that much of a difference. It’s just that Thakur Baldev Singh gets his vengeance at the end and kills Gabbar. And in the version released in the last 50 years, he has to stop when the police officer comes in. To tell him ‘You are a law officer yourself. So, it’s not right to take the law into your hands and kill Gabbar.” ‘Sholay- The Final Cut’ to re-release with the original climax written by Salim-Javed.

Sholay is an all-time classic, and cine lovers will finally get a chance to see the original version after 50 years of its release. The movie holds the record for the most-viewed Indian film, and ‘Sholay’ will be loved by generations to come. ‘Sholay- The Final Cut’ to re-release in cinemas with Dolby 5.1 and in 4K.
