Why India lost to Ireland in the T20 series
Failure to Adapt to Belfast Conditions
- The conditions in Belfast are very different from what Indian players usually face.
- The pitch was slow and had some movement for seamers.
- Instead of adapting to conditions, many batters went for irresponsible batting and got out.
- Building the innings became tough as wickets fell regularly.
- Ireland understood the pitch and used it to their advantage from the first over.
Ireland’s swing bowling was outstanding
- Ireland’s fast bowlers made the most of the conditions to keep India under pressure from the very beginning.
- The ball was swinging and the bowlers made it tough with their line and length.
- The good bowling did not allow the Indian batsmen to settle in both the matches.
Batting Collapses Hurt India
- Indian batting let the team down in both T20’s.
- In the first match, the chase started well but regular wickets broke the momentum.
- The same thing happened in the 2nd T20, where India was in a good position but middle and lower order failed.
- Losing wickets put more pressure on remaining batsmen.

Overconfidence Cost India
- India came into the series as clear favourites, but Ireland looked more determined from the first ball.
- While India expected the things to go their way, Ireland played every moment with full focus.
- In the first T20, Ireland grabbed important chances and never allowed India to take control.
- In the second T20, Ireland played with same energy till the final ball.
IPL Approach Didn’t Work
- Most of the Indian batsmen came to the series straight from the flat IPL pitches.
- But the conditions in Ireland were completely different, with the ball moving around and the pitch demanding patience.
- In both the matches, players tried to play big shots and lost wickets at the wrong time.
- Ireland adjusted much better, while the Indians struggled to move away from aggressive style.
Akash Chopra Worried About How India Used Washington Sundar
- Former India player Akash Chopra showed his concern on how the team is utilizing Sundar.
- He said on his You Tube channel “What are we doing with Washi? We are playing him, but are not playing him. Giving a chance doesn’t mean just playing. Giving a chance means you are given proper overs, made to bat at a proper number, given a slightly bigger role, and the role should be clearly assigned. A player gets lost many times if the role is not clearly demarcated,”
Sunil Gavaskar Did Not Like The Way India Played
- Sunil Gavaskar termed the team overconfident. He wrote on his column for Sportstar magazine, “Will go down as one of the worst days in Indian cricket. Losing a game of cricket is one thing, but to lose a series, albeit a two-match series, also depends on whom you lose to”.
- He added “ There are many low points in Indian Cricket, and I have been a part of some, but to lose to Ireland has to be one of the lowest in the history of Indian cricket. If Ireland had played exceptional cricket then it would have lessened the blow. It was simply overconfidence and a sense of casualness that let India down, and that’s why the sadness.”

Ex-cricketer Mohammed Kaif Wanted Vaibhav Suryavanshi In The Team
- “If we talk about the best playing XI, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi had a place in there; his name should have been there. The logic given was that this is a World Cup-winning team, so we will go with the same XI and Vaibhav will have to wait,” Kaif said on his YouTube channel.
- “But you have to be consistent with that logic, right? When Rohit Sharma was dropped as captain after winning the Champions Trophy, it was said that they were focused on the future, so they wanted a young captain,” Kaif added.
- “Same with Suryakumar Yadav as well, dropped after winning the World Cup and once again, being told that they are looking towards the future. If you are looking at the future, do you have a 15-year-old player who is bringing a better future than him? Kaif added
Conclusion
