The selection of the Indian team for the upcoming one-day internationals against Australia raised many eyebrows. The decision shocked many ex-cricketers and fans. Rohit Sharma is not the captain of the team, and Shubhnam Gill is the new captain of the one-day international team.
Gill Is The New Captain For The ODI Team
Shubham Gill recently took over as Captain of the Indian Test Team. He has also taken over as captain of the ODI team for the forthcoming series against Australia. The three-match ODI series begins on 19th October in Australia. The decision is a big shock for Rohit Sharma fans. If reports are to be believed, both Rohit and Virat Kohli are not in Team India’s plan for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Shubham Gill will be the vice captain for the five T20 matches that follow the ODIs.
Is Gambhir Behind The Move
Gautam Gambhir has taken over as Coach in 2024, and he is building a new young team. However, the seniors are not on his agenda. Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement midway through the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and even Kohli and Rohit Sharma followed suit in Test Cricket. The selectors did not include Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami in the squad for the Australian Tour. This could be curtains for both Jadeja and Shami for ODIs and T20s. Gambhir might be sidelining all the seniors, which makes him more powerful in the Indian Cricket Team.
Ex-Players Have Different Views On The Scenario

Manoj Tiwary alleged that Gautam Gambhir was responsible for the retirement of senior players. Tiwary was all in praise of Kohli and Rohit and said their contribution to the team has been outstanding. Meanwhile, Dilip Vengsarakar questioned the selection of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. He said, “Rohit and Virat have been great players over the years, but if you are playing just one format of the game, I believe the selectors need to take a call on this. I feel you cannot know or judge the form and fitness of such players because they’ve had a long layoff after the last game they played. It’s tough to assess their form and fitness.”
With almost no senior players in the team touring Australia, it will be exciting to see how the team performs in Australia. As a die-hard Indian supporter, I hope the team does well and Gambhir’s plan does miracles for Team India.
