Australian All-Rounder Glenn Maxwell Retires From ODI Cricket

Legendary Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell announced his retirement from one-day cricket on the 2nd of June 2025. Maxwell said that he will focus on T20 and continue playing in the shorter format of the game. The 36-year-old right-hand batsman said that he felt that he was letting the team down.

Maxwell scored his runs in a flamboyant style. He began playing in 2012 and played in 149 ODIs, scoring 3990 runs at an average of 33.81 with 77 useful wickets as well as an off-spinner. He is known as one of the best fielders of all time and has taken 91 catches in ODIs. Also, he has many memorable knocks to his credit with one double hundred, three hundred, and twenty-three fifties. He played at a strike rate of 126.77, which is considered a match-winning strike rate.

IPL Contributions and Retirement Decision

In the Indian Premier League, Maxwell has played 141 matches with 2819 runs with a top score of 95 and 18 fifties. As a bowler, he captured 41 wickets. Maxwell announced his retirement as Australia is preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup, and he feels he will be 38 by that time and won’t be fit enough to fit the bill.

He is not playing in the current ongoing IPL 2025 due to his finger injury, and he has been in and out of the Australian team due to injuries since 2022. He had recently played a superb knock of a double century against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup, which won the crucial match for Australia.

A Lasting Legacy in ODI Cricket

Maxwell played ODIs for 13 years and always gave his 100 percent to the team in Australia. He even shined in the Indian Premium League with his all-round abilities. He will be remembered as a great finisher, a handy off-spin bowler, and a brilliant fielder.
