Himachal Pradesh is one of the most beautiful states of India, with snow-capped mountains, green forests, a great climate, ancient temples, and overall a mesmerizing place to be. Himachal is often referred to as Dev Bhoomi, which means “Land of the Gods.” Truly so, there are many ancient temples in the state. Tara Devi temple is one of the most ancient temples in Himachal, and today we will explore the history and significance of this ancient and devoted temple of Maa Tara Devi.

History of Tara Devi Temple
The Temple was constructed by the Sen family of Bengal. Emperor Bhupendra Singh brought the deity from Bengal and put it on Tarav Parvat for protection and blessing. The statue of Maa Tara is made of Ashtadhatu which represents shelter and safeguard. Maa Tara Devi had asked the king in his dream to set up her idol on the peak of the hill. Since then the Temple has had devotees from all over India.
Trekking To The Temple
Tara Devi Temple is linked by rail and road but the best way to reach there is by trekking via the beautiful Tarab hills. The Temple is just 18 kilometres from Mall Road, Shimla.
Tunnel Track Way
This route starts from Tara Devi railway station and goes up to the temple. You can continue the track along the railway track which goes through the tunnel of the Kalka-Shimla rail line or from the jungle above the railway station. This trek goes through a beautiful dense forest which is breathtaking.
Jungle Track Way
This one is straight from the thick jungle with a narrow path which takes around 2 hours through a forest of rhododendron, oak, and pinewood. As the trek progresses the view of Shimla is breathtaking. The trek takes you closer to nature and you feel cut off from the world.
The peak period to visit Tara Devi Temple is from October to March because it’s a good time to trek and you won’t be exhausted during the trek as hotter days begin in April. It’s a half-day trek so carry something to eat, a bottle of water, a torch, and a light bag with your chargers and other useful stuff.
