The Cast and Crew
The film has a decent star cast of Kajol, Ronit Roy, Indraneil Sengupta, Yaaneea Bharadwaj, Kherin Sharma and Gopal Sharma. Maa is produced by Ajay Devgn, Jyoti Deshpande, and Ashish Khatpal, who are the associate producers, and the film is directed by Vishal Furia.
The Plot

Kajol plays the title role of Maa, fighting the dark forces to save her daughter. Well, the plot sounds interesting, and the story has a mythological touch to it. The visuals are good that go with the movie, but in the 2-hour 13-minute movie, you hardly find any horror. The film is more of a family drama.
The Story
Kajol lives with her husband (Indraneil Sengupta) and daughter (Kherin Sharma) in Kolkata. Indraneil is originally from Chandarpur, West Bengal, and for some reason, they are avoiding visiting their native place. Kherin is keen to visit Chandarpur and is forcing her father to do so. The same day, Indraneil gets the news of his father’s demise in Chandarpur, and he immediately leaves to perform the last rites.
After performing the last rites, Indraneil meets the sarpanch of the village, played by Ronit Roy, and he shares his plans of selling off his ancestral house and asks Ronit to help him in doing so. Indraneil begins his journey back to his family in Kolkata the same night, but he dies mysteriously.
Kajol and her daughter are shattered but still bravely try to move on in their lives. After some time, the sarpanch informs Kajol that a broker is interested in buying their property, and the broker wants to see the property in Chandarpur. Kajol decides to leave for Chandarpur to fulfil the last wish of her husband. Her daughter also joins Kajol on her road trip to their native place, as she did not want to stay alone. The incidents that follow form the rest of the movie.
The Verdict
Kajol is outstanding throughout the film; her expressions and acting skills are at their best. The mother-daughter bonding is portrayed very nicely. The direction and the editing could have been better, and the song in the climax was not needed. The horror in the movie is just for a few moments, and the special effects could have been better. Overall, it’s all Kajol’s show, and she carries the film on her shoulders. The film is a one-time watch for its climax and die-hard Kajol fans.
