Sholay was released on 15th August 1975, and it is 50 years since its release. The iconic movie will be re-released with the fully restored, uncut version. The cult movie’s world premiere will be held on Friday, 27th June, at the iconic open-air screen in Piazza Maggiore, Italy.

The film will premiere with its original ending and some deleted scenes, which were objected to by the censor board as they found them too violent during the emergency. Finally, we will all see Gabbar, the main villain, dying in the climax.

Jai and Veeru Get Nostalgic

Amitabh Bachchan, who played the role of Jai in the movie, said on occasion, “Some things in your life remain permanently etched in your mind. Sholay is one such film. Shooting for the film was an unforgettable experience, but at that time, I had no idea that it would be a watershed for Indian cinema. From its early struggle to its legendary box office run, it was an emotional rollercoaster. I hope that even 50 years later, the film will capture the imagination of new audiences across the world.”

Dharmendra, who played the role of Veeru, said, “Sholay is the 8th wonder of the world! Every character became a star, but the real hero was the coin. Many don’t know – I was offered Gabbar and Thakur’s roles, but I chose Veeru because he’s like me. My favourite scenes? The tanki, the temple, and, of course, Jai’s death – that scene still lives in my heart.”

The Restoration Took More Than Three Years

Producer Shehzad Sippy was quoted saying, “It has taken us three years, but we were able to find the original ending and some deleted scenes that the world will see for the first time at the grand premiere at the II Cinema Ritrovato Festival in Bologna. I can’t wait for Sholay to begin its new lease of life.”

Sholay is arguably the most successful film in the Hindi film industry (Bollywood). The movie broke many records at the box office and created an unbeatable record of success that any actor or producer can dream of. The milestone movie changed filmmaking in the country.

Writers started getting recognition after this movie. The action of the path-breaking film was outstanding, the dialogues had become cultural and still very popular, all the characters in the movie seemed real, and even small characters were written and portrayed par excellence.

We hope the same magic is created again and the cult classic “Sholay” breaks its own records at the box office. The music of Sholay is equally legendary, with R.D. Burman’s unforgettable compositions becoming anthems of their time. Songs like “Yeh Dosti” and “Mehbooba Mehbooba” are still celebrated for their timeless appeal. As the film returns to cinemas, its soundtrack promises to stir nostalgia just as powerfully as the story itself.
