Kajol’s starrer “Maa” has released today all over India. The movie is publicised as a mythological horror, but sadly, horror is missing, and it’s more of a family drama.

The Cast and Crew

The film has a decent star cast of Kajol, Ronit Roy, Indraneil Sengupta, Yaaneea Bharadwaj, Kherin Sharma and Gopal Sharma. Maa is produced by Ajay Devgn, Jyoti Deshpande, and Ashish Khatpal, who are the associate producers, and the film is directed by Vishal Furia.

The Plot

Kajol plays the lead character of Maa who is confronting the dark forces to save her daughter. The plot is engrossing and the story has a mythical touch to it. The visuals are good that go with the movie, but in the 2-hour 13-minute movie, you hardly find any horror. The film is more of a family affair.

The Story

Kajol stays with her husband (Indraneil Sengupta) and daughter (Kherin Sharma) in Kolkata. Indraneel is from Chandrapur and avoids going to his birthplace. Kherin always wants to visit Chandrapur and she keeps forcing her father to visit the place. Indraneil gets the news of his father’s demise in Chandarpur on the same day and he straight away leaves to do the last rituals.

After the rituals he meets the sarpanch(Ronit Roy) of the village. Indraneil tells the sarpanch that he wants to sell his old house in Chandrapur. Indraneil dies a mysterious death on his way back to his family in Kolkata.

Kajol and her daughter are shattered but still bravely try to move on in their lives. After some time, the sarpanch informs Kajol that a broker is interested in buying their property, and the broker wants to see the property in Chandarpur. Kajol decides to leave for Chandarpur to fulfil the last wish of her husband. Her daughter also joins Kajol on her road trip to their native place, as she did not want to stay alone. The incidents that follow form the rest of the movie.

The Verdict

Kajol carries the movie on her shoulders and her expressions and acting are at their best. The mother-daughter connect is portrayed well. The direction and the editing are average and the song in end was not needed. The horror is just for short period and the special effects look below the mark. The film is a single time watch for its climax and Kajol’s fans.
