What is sustainable or eco-friendly fashion?

There has been a big rise in the apparel world because of growing demand for clothes of late. People are buying new clothes regularly and you can see a lot of small or big boutiques in every corner of your city. High street malls and online shopping have made shopping a habit for many people. 

More production of clothes with techniques that are not good for the environment leads to wastage of natural resources and pollutes the air, water, and land. Even labour is exploited in many countries in production, and fast fashion has led to an increase in throwaway culture as well. 

Sustainable fashion reduces the impact on the environment and solves all the problems created by fast fashion. It can be more costly than fast fashion, but the long-term result will be great for the buyer and maker. The buyers should purchase from brands that care about nature and avoid brands that are bad to the environment. 

Examples of sustainable fashion

Natural and Organic Materials:

Sustainable fashion is made from organic stuff like linen and cotton. They are manufactured without harmful chemicals and pesticides. Wool can be utilized in responsible clothing which can be biodegradable and revived.

Ethical Practice:

Labourers in some places are exploited with little salary, extra work and not so good working environment. Sustainable fashion makes sure that laborers are getting paid well and work in healthy surrondings. Natural Dyes:

Natural dyes are utilized in eco fashion and they come from flowers, plants, and other natural sources. Synthetic colors and dyes are harmful to humans and nature. White natural dyes are nature friendly and non-toxic.

Slow Fashion:

Slow fashion is the opposite of fast fashion, in which quality is given preference over quantity in production. This process will reduce new buying and help save the environment. The quality of sustainable fashion is generally good, and it can be used for an extended period. Sharing and renting also help in reducing new buying.

Use of Recycled Material:

Utilizing recycled wool or recycled plastic to make clothes can save a lot of natural things used in making clothes. It’s a very important part of sustainable fashion because the things used to make clothes are waste. 

Upcycling:

Upcycling is the further action of sustainable fashion and it’s dissimilar from recycling. Upscaling is utilizing anything that is of no use or unwanted. It can be old clothes, old curtains, or even fabric scraps to make new clothes. Upcycling reduces textile waste, which is a huge plus, and the end product is always out of this world.

Maintenance of Existing Clothes:

A lot of clothes are just wasted or thrown away due to fast fashion. Sustainable fashion is all about maintaining and repairing old clothes and not disposing of them. Mending old clothing increases their life and avoids new buying.

Why is sustainable fashion critical?

Clothing is the next biggest polluting industry after oil. It utilizes trillions of liters of water yearly and is responsible for 10 percent of entire carbon emissions. Millions of tonnes of refuse are buried or burnt. Chemicals utilized in the coloring procedure can be bad  for both user and environment. Rivers in many countries are worst hit due to contaminated water from the clothing industry.

We all need to work on sustainable fashion because the Earth is facing the worst global climate problems. Sustainable fashion answers many questions like climate change, workers issues and conservation.
