How And Why Did Reticules Come To Be?
So, in the late 1800s, the Victorians decided that they would solve poverty, child labor, and sanitation problems by deepening social inequalities. This revival of classicism brought with it sleeker and slimmer dresses. The issue now was, ‘Where would the classy ladies put their little pouch that was usually hung by their bulky dresses?’. That is pretty much why these tiny handbags that were slouchy, laced, beaded, or embroidered, called reticules, came into existence. These bags were decorated to be statement pieces, and women usually made reticule bags themselves. Some were made of silk, satin, velvet, or even nets. But their impracticality made this trend short-lived.

Classy Comeback
Here is why I think these Victorian bags are making a comeback- Etro had reticule bags paired with their outfits in the spring-summer Milan Fashion Week. I think they look like Victorian art mixed into Boho fashion. And you know what? They seem fun. It’s like each one has a personality of its own somehow. Another reason for their return is the hype among Bridgerton fans because they have been featured a lot in the show.

Now, all of us can’t really afford these luxury brands. As an alternative, you can find some mini bags in your local markets and decorate them with bag charms that are similar to the style of reticule that you like. You can even make one of your own through tutorials on YouTube. I didn’t see any affordable and pretty options available online, so that was a disappointment.
How Do I Style My Reticule?
I would go for baggy pants with a printed tee and the reticule for an everyday look. But if you want something extravagant, you could style a reticule with slim long dresses, frilly maxi dresses, or chic jumpsuits. Oh, and of course, a crochet top with wide pants would look adorable with an embroidered reticule. They are also weirdly perfect for attending weddings because they can be a statement piece without taking up too much space. Just maybe don’t pair them with anything super sporty (if you can pull it off, call me).
